"Arch Enemy #1"

Ed introduced and presented a video of some spectacular (and scary!) flying through natural stone arches in Canyonlands, Utah by "old/bold" pilot Tim Martin.  To order a copy of the 28 minute tape, contact Tim Martin, P.O. Box 134, La Sal, Utah.

Bill Starr
The Berlin Airlift.

Member Bill Starr, also a volunteer flight crewmember with the Berlin Airlift Historical Foundation, presented a program on the group’s activities and flights that occurred in 2004.  The founder and chief pilot of the group was involved in the Berlin Airlift and participated in the world renowned Candy Flights that helped to ease the plight of the children in Berlin by dropping parachuted candy packages during the airlift.

Fred Murray
Retired Flight Engineer

Mr. Murray started his flying career at Forty-Fort Airport as a kid. He retired in 1992 after 34 years and 22,000 hours with American Airlines as a flight engineer. He had the privilege of meeting Chuck Yeager when he helped unload the X-1 from the B-29 that transported it to Andrews Air Force base when it was put on display at the Smithsonian.  He shared some great stories with us!

Pat McCann

Tech Aviation

As the temporary FBO at WBW, Pat talked to us about Tech's plans at the airport.  Tech is eager to work with the pilots to make WBW a safe, professionally-managed operation while retaining the “small airport atmosphere”.  Tech hopes that they will be offered the opportunity to be the permanent FBO.  During the excellent exchange, Pat encouraged us to contact him with problems or suggestions at pat@techaviation.com.

Anton Schulden
Air Traffic Controller at AVP

Anton presented issues that affect us as pilots in the area and shared with us some of his experiences.  He also give some valuable advice on avoiding runway incursions.

Pat J. Solano

Pat was a crewmember of B17's during WWII and flew many missions.  He is currently Senior Advisor to the Republican Senate in Harrisburg.  Was past Deputy for the dept. of Environmental Resources.  He has served under every Governor since Milton Shapp.

He showed a video, discussed it and answered questions.

Shawn and Kim provided a very enlightening presentation on the history, mission and operations of the Civil Air Patrol.

Russ presented an excellent program on the early days of the postal airmail service, accompanied by some great historic photos.

Video Night

Craig Yarrish provided a video showing a TV news channel’s reporting of member Eddie Topper’s dunking in the Atlantic Ocean off Cape May, NJ this summer.  Ed was working for a banner towing company and ended up ditching off the shore when his aircraft could not maintain altitude while towing a banner.  Although the plane was not recovered as of this time, Eddie was back in the air within a couple of hours towing another banner. 

Craig also provided a second video presentation entitled “Heads UP – Hold Short – Fly Right”. This video, supplied by AOPA Air Safety Foundation, dealt with runway incursion awareness.
